George Mason University : Bioinformatics and Computational Biology : Bioinformatics Management Major

New Program in Bioinformatics Management

George Mason University's College of Science, Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and the School of Management are proud to announce a new and exciting program that will award a Master's of Science in Bioinformatics Management.

The M.S. in Bioinformatics Management is intended for:

Students seeking advancement in their current bioinformatics careers that requires an advanced degree in bioinformatics combined with management expertise.
Students with a general background in biological science or computational methods who are planning to enter the field of bioinformatics as managers and would like to strengthen their bioinformatics and managerial expertise

The general academic requirements for completion of the M.S. in Bioinformatics Management are organized into several areas:

Bioinformatics Core Courses (15 credits) - foundational courses in modern biotechnology, tools and method for bioinformatics analysis, and methods for creating customized bioinformatics tools.
1. BINF 630 Bioinformatics Methods
2. BINF 631 Molecular Cell Biology for Bioinformatics
3. BINF 634 Bioinformatics Programming
4. One of the following: BINF 633 Molecular Biotechnology, BINF 636 Microarray Methodology and Analysis, or BINF 650 Data Modeling for Bioinformatics
5. BINF 730 Biological Sequence Analysis or above
Management Core Courses (12 credits) - foundational courses in management theory related directly to the management of scientific programs and personnel (subject to final approval).
1. MBA 638 Managing Operations
2. MBA 712 Project Management
3. TECM 615 Decision Making Using Accounting and Financial Information
4. TECM 640 Management of Consulting and Technical Professionals
Capstone research project (3 credits) - focusing on bioinformatics management issues and techniques
1. BINF 798 Research Project

All courses will be offered in the late afternoon or early evening to accommodate students with full-time employment outside the university
